Bathroom Remodeling in Wilton Manors

Small baths on a 1950s slab.

The typical Wilton Manors house arrived with one full bath and, if the original owners were feeling generous, a half off the hall. That worked in 1957. It does not work for anyone who has since seen a modern primary suite. So the common project across Westside, the Central Area and the Three Bridges streets is subtraction and addition at once: a third bedroom or an oversized closet gives up floor area, the hall bath grows into it, and what emerges is a suite with a double vanity, a shower you can turn around in, and a tub that stands on its own.

Bathroom remodeling in Wilton Manors is permitted through Community Development Services, and the job gets inspected by discipline as it goes: plumbing, electrical, mechanical. That sequence is the whole point, because waterproofing is verified before tile hides it. The local complication is the slab. These houses sit on grade with cast iron drains cast into concrete, so a relocated toilet or a recessed curbless pan means saw-cutting, re-routing and re-pouring. Add a window for daylight and Broward's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone product rules apply to the unit and to how it is fastened.

No room in the house is smaller or less forgiving. Pans are flood-tested and left overnight before anyone opens a box of tile. Slopes get checked with a level rather than a hopeful glance. Blocking goes into the walls for heavy glass and for grab bars you may not want yet. Every job carries a fixed written scope, a supervisor who shows up daily, and a license and insurance that are current, Lic. CGC1539072, with permits and inspections on all of it. Beautiful tile over bad waterproofing is a countdown, not a renovation.

What's included

The bath scope on a slab house.

Scoped in writing before the tile order goes in, because changing your mind at rough-in is the expensive kind of change. The usual components below.

01

Bedroom traded for a suite

Reworking bedroom, closet and hall bath into one suite, with new rough-ins, framing and a permit set drawn to match the plan you actually approved.

02

Curbless pans in a slab

Recessing the pan into a 1950s slab where the drain line and structure allow, with a linear drain, and a low-profile alternative offered honestly when they do not.

03

Membranes filled and tested

Bonded sheet or liquid membranes with corners and penetrations detailed, then filled and left overnight so any leak announces itself before the marble arrives.

04

Heavy glass on real blocking

Frameless enclosures hung from blocking installed during framing, with hinge locations set before drywall closes rather than negotiated with a glazier afterward.

05

Exhaust routed outside

Quiet fans ducted through a low-slope mid-century roof to a proper cap, so humidity leaves the building instead of touring the attic space.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Which parts of a bathroom job get inspected?
More than owners expect, and that is a feature. On a permitted bath remodel through Community Development Services you will see a plumbing rough, an electrical rough, framing where walls moved, mechanical for the exhaust, then finals by discipline. Waterproofing is looked at before tile covers it, which is the inspection that saves you. Requests filed online before 4:30 p.m. land the next business day, so a small bathroom does not stall waiting for a visit.
Is a curbless shower realistic on a slab house?
Often, but the slab decides, not the photograph. Recessing a pan means saw-cutting concrete, relocating the drain and re-pouring, and on some 1950s houses the existing line depth makes that a poor trade. When it works, it is worth doing properly. When it does not, a low curb with a correctly pitched pan and a linear drain reads almost identically and costs far less to build right.
The house still has cast iron drains. Do we replace them?
If the floor is already open, replace them. Cast iron installed during the Wilton Manors building boom is at or past its service life, and the failure mode is a slow leak under a slab you have just retiled. We run a camera down the lines early, so the call gets made on evidence instead of instinct. Handling it while the floor is open costs a fraction of handling it after the stone is set and the glass is hung.
Can we add a window without triggering a hurricane-code problem?
You can add one, but it turns into a code item. Any new or enlarged exterior opening in Broward is a High-Velocity Hurricane Zone opening, which means an approved impact unit, a sealed installation detail and a wind-load calculation in the permit set. Obscure impact glass buys privacy and daylight with nothing to close before a storm. It adds a step to the drawings, not a month to the schedule.
How much does a primary bath at this level cost?
Wide range, and honestly so. Fixtures, stone and heavy glass set the visible cost. The plumbing rerouting, waterproofing and framing behind them set the real one, and slab work moves the number more than clients expect. We walk the space, scope what the building genuinely needs rather than what a catalog suggests, and put a fixed price on it. Finish work at this level is what we do; low bidding is not.
