Kitchen Remodeling in Coral Gables

The kitchen your 1926 floor plan never imagined.

The classic Coral Gables kitchen problem is architectural. Merrick-era homes in Riviera, the Country Club Section, and the French Village were designed when kitchens were service rooms, tucked behind the dining room and sized for one cook who was not the homeowner. Today the kitchen is where everyone stands. So the high-end kitchen remodeling project here is usually a rescue mission: absorbing a butler's pantry or breakfast room, opening a masonry wall to the dining room, and putting a proper island where a bank of 1950s cabinets used to be.

An interior-only kitchen remodel in Coral Gables goes to the city's Development Services Department for permits and plan review without a stop at the Board of Architects. Change anything visible from outside, such as enlarging the window over the sink, venting through the facade, or cutting a new door to the terrace, and Board review comes first. Kitchens in designated historic homes may also need a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes. Then there is the unglamorous part: plenty of older Gables houses need electrical service upgrades before they can run a modern appliance package, and we fold that work into the same permit.

PGX builds kitchens the way cabinetmakers wish contractors would: measured twice, sequenced properly, stone templated after the cabinets are set rather than before. You get a fixed written scope, a supervisor on site every day, and dust protection that treats the rest of your house as the finished product it is. Over 20-plus years in South Florida we have delivered more than 150 remodels and additions, all permitted and inspected, and a Gables kitchen gets nothing looser than that standard.

What's included

What we build into a Gables kitchen.

Every kitchen is scoped line by line before demolition starts. These are the elements that come up most often in Gables homes.

01

Cabinetry, not catalog sizes

Built-to-order cabinet packages with proper face frames or European boxes, finished to survive Miami humidity, and sized to older ceilings rather than stock dimensions.

02

Islands that carry the stone

Marble, quartzite, or granite templated in place, with island structures engineered for weight and seating overhangs supported correctly instead of hopefully.

03

Wall openings and structure

Load calculations, engineered beams, and permits for opening the wall between a closed 1920s kitchen and the rooms people actually use.

04

Ranges, ovens, and gas lines

Moving ranges, ovens, and refrigeration where the layout wants them, with new gas lines, venting, and dedicated circuits permitted and inspected.

05

Lighting and electrical upgrades

Layered lighting design, plus the panel and service upgrades many older Gables homes need before an induction range or wine room shows up.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Coral Gables?
If the project touches plumbing, gas, electrical, or structure, and a real kitchen remodel touches all four, then yes: permits through the city's Development Services Department, with inspections along the way. Swapping appliances into existing hookups or repainting does not need one. Unpermitted work has a way of surfacing during a sale in the Gables, and retroactive permitting costs more than doing it right once.
Will the Board of Architects need to see my kitchen plans?
Not for a purely interior remodel; that goes straight to plan review. The Board gets involved when your kitchen scope changes the exterior, like a larger window over the sink, a new vent through the facade, or a door out to the terrace. If your home is a designated historic property, exterior changes also need a Certificate of Appropriateness. We flag which path applies during the first walk-through.
How long will a custom kitchen remodel take?
Custom cabinetry is the honest schedule driver: quality cabinet packages take months to fabricate, which is why we order them early and sequence demolition so your house is not torn open while you wait. On-site construction typically runs a couple of months for a full kitchen, longer when structural openings are involved. Plan in seasons rather than weekends and you will not be disappointed.
Can you make a new kitchen fit a 1920s Mediterranean home?
That is most of what we do here. Arched openings can be echoed rather than fought, cabinet faces can be detailed to sit comfortably beside original millwork, and modern appliances can disappear behind panels. The trick is respecting scale and proportion, because a 1926 house will forgive a modern kitchen but not a warehouse-sized one. Good design plus careful carpentry keeps the room feeling inevitable.
What does a high-end kitchen remodel cost in Coral Gables?
Custom cabinetry and natural stone lead every kitchen budget, with appliances close behind, so the range is wide and driven by your selections. We would rather scope precisely than quote vaguely: after a walk-through you get a fixed written number tied to a specification, not an estimate that inflates mid-project. If the deciding factor is the lowest number, we will say so early and part on good terms.
